“Klapa Kartolina” is a mixed klapa (group of a capella singers) of six members, which has been active since 2013, and is attached to the Croatian parish of St. Francis of Assisi in Windsor. The group has been registered since 2015 as a federal, non-profit association in Canada, and under its auspices there are two youth groups “Fritule” for the girls and “Berekin” for the boys. Most of the klapa’s performances and activities take place in Canada, but they have also performed in Croatia, where their greatest honor was to perform at the Dalmatian klapa Festival Omiš as a guest at the 50th anniversary festival in 2016, and at the Evenings of Klapa singers from Emigration in 2019.
Klapa regularly holds annual concerts, organizes klapa tours and brings guest performers from other countries. The following performing groups performed at the “Klapa Kartolina” concerts:
- “Klapa Krunik” from Kučine, near Solin
2019 “Klapa Maestral” from Toronto
- “Due Dolci”, an instrumental duo with Croatian roots from Chicago
- “Darbazi”, a vocal ensemble from Toronto that cultivates traditional Georgian a cappella singing
2022 “Klapa Kaše” from Dubrovnik and tambura group “Kraljica Jelena”, Kitchener
The klapa cooperated through its activities and projects with the Festival of Dalmatian klapas in Omiš, Croatian Heritage Foundation, the diplomatic missions of Croatia in Canada and Canada in Croatia, the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, and was the recipient of several grants from the Central State Office for Croats outside the Republic of Croatia and the Canada Council for the Arts, for your projects.
“Klapa Kartolina” is also involved in the publication of printed matter and publishes an annual calendar that, along with pictures from performances, publishes the lyrics of songs from the repertoire and translations in English. The printed calendars received high marks and praise for their quality and innovative promotion of Croatian national heritage. “Klapa Kartolina” has its permanent website at www.klapakartolina.com, where you can find all the information and links about them.
