Ana\u2019s father, Pa\u0161ko, owned a tavern and was a fervent supporter of the National Party. Painted proudly on the tavern ceiling was a Croatian flag with the checkerboard emblem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Ana and Ivan had a large family. According to Tomislav Alujevi\u0107 Grgas, Ana gave birth to twenty-four children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. Pa\u0161ko thus had four brothers and five sisters. Among them, the brothers Andrija and Ante stood out for their exceptional musical talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Andrija and Ante sang in the Split choirs Guslar, Tomislav, and Zvonimir, as well as in the choir of the Croatian National Theatre in Split. They were also skilled hunters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Ante married Marija Kragi\u0107, the daughter of one of Split\u2019s respected landowners, who\u2014interestingly\u2014had been expelled from school because he refused to read and write in Italian, insisting instead on using Croatian. Her father, Jure Damjan Kragi\u0107, was not enthusiastic about giving his only daughter in marriage, as their well-off farming family did not consider themselves of the same social standing as the Alujevi\u0107s, who were tavern keepers. Marija had also graduated from the prestigious school run by the Sisters of An\u010dela (Sisters Servants of a Little Jesus) in the Dobri district, and her dowry amounted to two kilograms of gold. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14722\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Marica-u-prvom-redu-cetvrta-s-desna.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"509\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Marica at school (fourt from the right in the first row)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14725\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Maricina-svjedodzba.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Marica&#8217;s school report<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Ante was friends with composer Ivo Tijardovi\u0107, who used Ante\u2019s romantic troubles as inspiration for the libretto of the operetta Splitski akvarel. The names Ante and Marija were changed to Ton\u0107i and Marica. One of the operetta\u2019s characters is also Pa\u0161ko, who had already emigrated by then, as Ton\u0107i mentions the dollars he sends from America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14728\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/TONCI-I-MARICA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ante and Marica as fianc\u00e9s<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14731\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Tonci-i-Marica.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ante and Marica<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14734\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG-20260217-WA0010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ante and his horse<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">One of the sisters, Slavka Alujevi\u0107, was an accomplished soprano and a respected dressmaker. The youngest brother, Ivo Alujevi\u0107 (born 1914), was a less gifted singer but gained recognition as a forward for the Split football club HNK Hajduk Split in the pre-war and wartime years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14737\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ivo-Alujevic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"663\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ivo Alujevi\u0107<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14740\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/FB_IMG_1770571524584.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"800\" \/> Ivo as a soccer player<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">The family lived in the Lu\u010dac district of Split. A close family friend was composer and conductor Josip Hatze, who frequently visited their home on Rokova Street, where, as he liked to say, he had his own small \u201cchamber choir.\u201d As a true musician, he could not resist conducting such a family ensemble. At the age of seven, Pa\u0161ko\u2019s father sent him to sing in the boys\u2019 choir of the Church of St. Peter, which was later destroyed during World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14743\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alujevici.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"548\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Alujevi\u0107 Family<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Of all the children, Pa\u0161ko was the only one who chose to venture out into the world. His family supported him by selling part of their land to fund his journey. In 1923, he went to Trieste intending to travel to North America. However, due to a misunderstanding with a friend assisting him, he was mistakenly put on a ship bound for Montevideo instead of the United States. At the time, however, all overseas destinations were commonly referred to simply as \u201cAmerica.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">In Montevideo, he initially worked in cold storage facilities and later in a chocolate factory, though he did not stay long with any single employer. One day, while passing by a cathedral from which singing could be heard, he approached the choirmaster\u2014an Italian\u2014after Mass. The choirmaster offered him a job as a gardener and a place in the choir, while also teaching him singing. This encounter proved decisive for his future artistic path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">After two years in Montevideo, Pa\u0161ko managed to obtain the necessary documents and moved to Chicago. There he began a new chapter in his life and changed his name to Theodore Lovich. In Chicago, he sang with the Croatian choral society \u201cZora,\u201d where his teacher was the Russian-Polish opera singer Gabriel Chrzanowski. As early as 1927, Pa\u0161ko performed the role of the Sultan in the opera Nikola \u0160ubi\u0107 Zrinjski by Ivan pl. Zajc, staged in Chicago by the \u201cZora\u201d society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14746\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_1245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"552\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pa\u0161ko, now Theodore in the USA<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14749\" src=\"https:\/\/virtualnimuzej.aspira.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_1246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">In 1933, he went to further his studies at the Conservatoire International de Musique de Paris, and upon returning to the United States in 1934, he became a member of the Chicago Civic Opera Company. He performed numerous roles from works by Italian, German, French, and Russian composers. He was also a member of the opera companies International Opera Company, Festival Opera Company, and America Opera Company, as well as the distinguished ensemble Chicago Opera Quartet (Giuseppe Cavadore, tenor; Mari Barova, contralto; Barbara Darlys, soprano; Theodore Lovich, bass-baritone).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">The American press devoted considerable attention to him in the mid-1930s. Herman Dervies of the Chicago American (November 13, 1934) praised Pa\u0161ko\u2019s (Lovich\u2019s) debut, writing that he was a bass-baritone from whom much was expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Numerous newspaper reviews followed:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cDuring the June performance of Gounod\u2019s <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Faust<\/span><\/em> at Kimball Hall, organized by the \u2018International Grand Opera Company,\u2019 the remarkable talents of this distinguished Croatian baritone came fully to the fore. He demonstrated exceptional acting ability\u2026 brilliant vocal power and authority.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Novi Svijet<\/span><\/em>, February 1932.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cTheodor Lovich distinguished himself in one of the smaller roles, that of the Doctor, as a discreet and imaginative artist.\u201d \u2014 Eugene Stinson, <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Chicago Daily News<\/span><\/em>, November 15, 1934.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cTheodor Lovich, bass, contributed an impressive performance of an aria from <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Prince Igor<\/span><\/em> (Borodin).\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Musical Leader<\/span><\/em>, July 13, 1935.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cA new voice, that of Theodor Lovich, enchanted the audience last night.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Courier<\/span><\/em>, Ottumwa, Iowa, March 5, 1935.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cAn outstanding performance was that of Theodor Lovich as a truly diabolical Mephisto.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Joplin Globe<\/span><\/em>, February 28, 1935.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cThe Chicago company brought to Lincoln a cast composed entirely of stars\u2026 Theodor Lovich, bass, who excelled in the role of the King of Egypt, and Reinald Werrenrath, the well-known baritone\u2026\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Lincoln State Journal<\/span><\/em>, May 7, 1935.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cTheodor Lovich as Mephistopheles proved himself the possessor of a powerful, resonant voice, easily capable of ominous domination of the stage at every appearance.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Salina Journal<\/span><\/em>, February 21, 1935.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cMr. Lovich made a strong impression with his interpretation of compositions by Manna Zucca (\u2018I Love Life\u2019) and Bruno Huhn (\u2018Invictus\u2019). His powerful bass-baritone was elevated by his dramatic abilities.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">South Bend Tribune<\/span><\/em>, February 19, 1936.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cAmerican critics have often mentioned and praised the Yugoslav singer Theodor Lovich, and rightly so; last Friday he received ovations in <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">The Bartered Bride<\/span><\/em> in the role of Michu.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Ned\u011bln\u00ed Svornost<\/span><\/em>, December 6, 1936.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cLovich, celebrated for his roles in <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Faust<\/span><\/em> and <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Martha<\/span><\/em>, offered an ideal bass-baritone\u2026 His interpretation of \u2018The Volga Boatmen\u2019 brought freshness to that well-known Russian song.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Mining Journal<\/span><\/em>, Marquette, Michigan, February 26, 1936.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cA crowd estimated at 24,000\u2026 listened to the equally impressive Theodore Lovich in the role of the Bonze, a majestic and awe-inspiring priest.\u201d \u2014 Isabel Morse Jones, <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Times<\/span><\/em>, August 27, 1937.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cTheodor Lovich greatly contributed to the brilliance of the performance\u2026 he succeeded both musically and dramatically.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Cedar Rapids Gazette<\/span><\/em>, May 6, 1937.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cTheodore Lovich was convincing as the Egyptian king; he developed his role in a way that truly served the whole.\u201d \u2014 Carl Bronson, <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">L. Evening Herald-Express<\/span><\/em>, February 19, 1938.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cHe achieved tremendous success at his second concert. The program was excellent, and the voice rich and artistically shaped. His finest performances were the \u2018Monologue\u2019 from Mussorgsky\u2019s <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Boris Godunov<\/span><\/em> and the \u2018Leporello\u2019 aria from Mozart\u2019s <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Don Giovanni<\/span><\/em>.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Yugo-Slav Herald<\/span><\/em>, San Francisco, January 15, 1938.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">\u201cThe concert was so well attended that only standing-room tickets were issued. The engaging program, which included arias from beloved operas and songs in English and Slavic languages, was performed brilliantly by the artist.\u201d \u2014 <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">News-Pilot<\/span><\/em>, San Pedro, February 18, 1938.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Our Pa\u0161ko, now Theodore, first performed in Hollywood in 1938 at the famous open-air venue Hollywood Bowl. He liked California and settled in El Monte. Since Los Angeles did not yet have a permanent opera house at the time, he supplemented his income by singing as a soloist in the cabaret \u201cParisienne,\u201d where all waiters were required to be singers. He also appeared in two Hollywood films, I&#8217;ll Take Romance and Balalaika, and worked as a Russian-language translator at a shipyard in San Pedro, where Soviet ships were repaired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">After World War II, he opened a music school and a vocal training studio in El Monte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">In the late 1960s, he decided to donate the sheet music and instruments he had collected over the years to the Josip Hatze Music School in Split. The shipment was transported by the ship <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Ljutomer<\/span><\/em> from San Pedro directly to Split. His son, Tom Alujevi\u0107, compiled an inventory of the items sent in a wooden crate: a large quantity of sheet music, a new trumpet, and two violins\u2014one German-made and the other, reportedly, a Stradivarius violin from 1722.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\">Upon the shipment\u2019s arrival, Pa\u0161ko received a letter of thanks from the school along with an invitation to visit upon returning to Split. Unfortunately, over time the violins and other instruments were lost, and they are no longer part of the school\u2019s holdings.
