Marko Sladi\u0107 was born on January 11, 1896, in Plastovo, a small village near \u0160ibenik in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Faced with the harsh living conditions of his homeland, he made the difficult decision to emigrate to South America.<\/p>\n
According to the passport that remains in my possession, duly certified and stamped, Marko boarded a ship in the port of Bremen in 1929 with the Argentine Republic as his final destination. Before his departure, he had fulfilled all the requirements imposed by the authorities, including the payment of a fee of three gold pesos, which officially authorized his emigration to Argentina. He began his journey on April 16, 1929.<\/p>\n
According to his arrival records, he disembarked in Buenos Aires on May 18, 1929, at the age of thirty-three, aboard the ship Madrid<\/em>, as a citizen of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Soon afterward, he traveled to the Argentine province of C\u00f3rdoba, where several of his fellow countrymen had already settled. Upon arriving, he rented a room in a boarding house, and the very next morning he set out in search of work.<\/p>\n As he walked through the city, he noticed a tall smokestack with smoke rising from it. Curious, he followed it and discovered that it belonged to the C\u00f3rdoba Power Station, now known as EPEC. Having previously worked as a stoker aboard a German ship, he confidently approached the entrance, where a long line of men was already waiting for employment. The supervisor addressed him in German, and Marko, who spoke several languages, replied fluently, explaining that he had served aboard a vessel sailing under the German flag. To the surprise of everyone present, he was hired immediately. He often recalled that he accepted a job many others refused\u2014shoveling coal into the furnaces.<\/p>\n He worked twelve-hour days for a daily wage of one peso. He managed his earnings with great discipline: ten cents went toward lodging, another ten toward food, while he saved everything else with one goal in mind\u2014to bring his wife, Bo\u017eica Ro\u0161ko, later known by the Hispanicized name Natalia Ro\u0161ko, and their two children, Ante and Kata Sladi\u0107, who later became Antonio and Catalina, to Argentina. After seven years, in 1936, he finally achieved his dream of reuniting his family. He remained employed at the same power station until his retirement.<\/p>\n Before emigrating, Marko worked at various jobs in Plastovo to support his family. He was a construction laborer, a farmer, and an employee at the hydroelectric power plant located in what is today Krka National Park, recognized as the first hydroelectric power plant in Europe.<\/p>\n My father vividly recalled how, as a young boy, he rode a donkey nearly ten kilometers each day from Plastovo to the power plant to bring his father lunch. This life story is based on real events that were told to me countless times by both my grandfather and my father. Today, with deep respect and nostalgia, I bring those memories to life once again.<\/p>\n I leave this testimony of a life marked by sacrifice, separation from family, and departure from a homeland that my grandfather always remembered with profound respect and immense pride as a lasting tribute to future generations. My hope is that they will understand the tremendous sacrifices made by our grandparents and parents to provide a better future for their children and grandchildren.
