Ante Brljevi\u0107 was born on June 10, 1885 in Momi\u0107i, a village in Desne parish. His parents were Kata Barbir and Ivan Brljevi\u0107. His brother Mate moved to New Zealand already in 1905. Mate worked in the settlement of Wade, which later changed its name to Silverdale. In 1910 he applied for New Zealand citizenship, which was granted after a few months. After that, he returned to his native village to take his younger brother Ante. The two brothers sailed into the port of Auckland on March 26th 1911th aboard \u2018\u2019Mahone\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n
The brothers did hard work together for a very short time because Mate quickly returned to his homeland where he participated in the World War I and later got married and had children. It is interesting that Mate’s grandchildren Ognjen and Neren Mi\u0161ur moved to New Zealand at the end of the 20th century, and their mother Fila Mi\u0161ur (n\u00e9e Brljevi\u0107), Mate’s daughter, joined them near the end of her life in Auckland, where she died.<\/p>\n
Ante Brljevi\u0107 stayed in New Zealand and continued to do hard work all over the country. Through a friend from the island of Hvar, he began to correspond with his sister, Katica Godinovi\u0107 from Bogomolje. She moved in with Ante and they got married in 1925. Ante supported his family by working in the kauri fields. They had six children and twenty grandchildren. They settled in the extreme north of the island in Kaitaia. Ante died in 1964 and was buried in the local cemetery.<\/p>\n
The children of Ante’s sister Jela (George, Kata and Pera Marevich) also found their new home in New Zealand. Pera Marevich married a \u0110ugum (Jugum) from Desne.<\/p>\n
The surname Brljevi\u0107 originates from the small village of Orah near Vrgorac, from where the ancestors of the Brljeviches from Momi\u0107 immigrated to the Neretva valley in the 18th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Brljevici from Momi\u0107 and Ora\u0161 were already distant relatives. Fate wanted the long-separated family branches to be partially reunited on an island thousands of kilometers from their homeland. Namely, along with the Brljeviches from Momi\u0107, part of the Brljeviches from Orah also moved to New Zealand. At the beginning of the 20th century, Ante Marko Brljevi\u0107 from Vrgorac lived in New Zealand alongside Ante Brljevi\u0107 from Momi\u0107.<\/p>\n
It should be noted that the Brljevici from Orah and Vrgorac in New Zealand began to record their surname as Brlevich, while the Brljevici from Momi\u0107 are written as Brljevich, which is how these two New Zealand branches of the same surname can be distinguished.<\/p>\n
